Osteopathy - Recommended for sciatica, disc injuries, migraines, stiffness, arthritis, sinusitis and whiplash injuries.

Osteopathy combines a thorough scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology with clinical methods of investigation. The osteopath assesses the patient's movements, joint mobility and muscle tensions and identifies any problem areas, while also taking into account lifestyle and work factors.

We offer both cranial and structural osteopathy. Cranial osteopathy corrects tissue mobility around the skull joints and through the body and is so gentle that the severest of conditions can be treated painlessly. Besides helping to treat the conditions listed above, this form of osteopathy can prove beneficial during the later stages of pregnancy and aid recovery after childbirth.

Structural osteopaths can diagnose accurately without the use of X-rays. By massaging and manipulating, the malfunctioning joint will be eased back into alignment and full working order. Many work-related conditions can be treated and remedial advice given and preventative exercise recommended

With over 4000 years of documented history, Acupuncture, along with Chinese Herbal medicine form the core of what is commonly known as Traditional Chinese medicine.

The medical and philosophical core of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine focuses on preventative care through the process of rebalancing a person’s flow of energy, called Qi, to resolve dysfunction or illness. Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Tui Na and Qi Gong all work towards this process, to ultimately harmonise the flow of Qi to harmonise not only the body, but also the mind.

As a result, Chinese medicine aims to treat the root causes of illness and not just its symptoms. Disorders arise not just as a result of illness, but also through an imbalance in lifestyle, whether it be related to diet, exercise, work or relationships. To achieve the best results from Chinese medicine, all three modalities are usually used in combination with one other. However, they can also be offered as stand-alone treatments.

Acupuncture works by inserting very fine, sterilised needles into specific points located on the body’s energy pathways, called meridians. A practitioner will use specific manipulations to achieve the desired effect needed to restore the smooth flow of Qi to either the points, meridians or organ(s). It can be used in the treatment of a wide variety of disorders, either acute or chronic in nature. Patients with a phobia of needles may be offered Tui Na as a suitable alternative.

Herbal medicine forms a crucial pillar of Chinese medicine and is particularly effective in the treatment of chronic and/or complex internal disorders and works on a more fundamental level of the body than acupuncture. It can also be used in the treatment of external disorders such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Herbal medicine prescriptions can be offered to patients as and when appropriate to each individual case.

Chinese massage therapy, Tui Na, is a massage system underpinned by the same medical and philosophical system as Acupuncture and Herbal medicine. A variety of techniques can be employed to manipulate body tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints.

This often includes the manipulation of pressure points commonly found in acupuncture. All Tui Na techniques are performed through clothing and range from very light and subtle to strong, physical manipulations. Tui Na has very diverse clinical applications, but is commonly used in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as joint injury, sprains, strains and trauma.

Cupping and Moxibustion are therapies used alongside Acupuncture and Tui Na to promote a greater efficacy in treatment by promoting the flow of Qi. They are used as and when necessary to each individual case.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are recommended for:

Musculoskeletal pain conditions
Headaches & Migraines
Ear Ache & Tinnitus
Hay fever & Seasonal Allergies
Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia & Hypertension
Gynaecological Disorders
Weight Loss

Remedial/Sports Massage is a service for everyone, deploying a variety of techniques for soft tissue rehab and maintenance. It is aimed at achieving a speedy and successful return to fitness after injury and can relieve a variety of conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Runners’ Knee (IT Band Syndrome), Tendonitis, Muscle Strains, Tennis/Golfers’ Elbow, Rotator Cuff injuries and post-surgery scar tissue as well as general muscle tension or pain such as lower back, neck or shoulder pain resulting from the inevitable stresses and strains of our lifestyles. For athletes at all levels, it can help enhance all-round performance, pre-event preparation and post-event recovery and is a good way of helping the body back in shape for training!

Myofascial Release (MFR) works on the complex 3D network of connective tissue in the body to address chronic pain, stiffness and loss of function, and is particularly relevant for issues which have built up over months, years or even decades whilst also being applicable for acute soft tissue injury. MFR techniques are deep but gentle and whilst sometimes treatment results in the discomfort increasing in the short term, treatment is in the most part relaxing as the fascia releases and re-organises.

My name is Magdalene and I am an associate member of the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), and the Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (ANP). As a Naturopath, Naturopathic Nutritionist and Iridologist I believe the complete person is the inter-relation of our psychological, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental state.

The key to Naturopathic principles is prevention, however, the body has the innate power to heal itself and my role is to educate and empower each individual to take control, to promote good health and restore wellbeing through appropriate nourishment and lifestyle.

Now more than ever, we lead stressful busy lifestyles in polluted environment’s leading to poor sleep and dietary habits, these are all disruptive to our homeostasis and in turn set our bodies out of balance. Symptoms of pathologies are alarm bells; a Naturopathic approach uses science based medicine whereby the whole person is considered in order to uncover the underlying root cause.

My special interest lies in the gut, research shows that many chronic metabolic diseases begin in the gut, we are not what we eat but what we absorb. The gut-brain axis is the communication system between your brain and gut, your brain affects your gut health and your gut affects your brain health. There are more neurons in the gut than there are in the brain, 70-80 percent of your immune system is in your gut and hormones in your gut help control your body clock. Billions of beneficial bacteria live in your gut, these are your ecosystem and play so many vital roles in promoting the smooth operations of your body’s network. A healthy gut will act as a barrier from external invaders such as toxins and other pathogens.

By achieving a greater state of health through balancing and sustaining the functions of the individual’s needs a Naturopathic approach can, amongst other conditions aid with the following:
• Digestive disorders, autoimmune disorders, liver and gastrointestinal health
• Hormonal imbalance, low energy, fatigue and skin health
• Immune strength, allergies, fungal infections and parasites
• Nervous system, poor sleep, fluctuating mood, ADHD, autism, stress management and anxiety
• Reproductive health, PMS, menopause and circulatory
• Weight management, metabolic syndrome, blood sugar balance, detoxification and brain fog
• Plant based nutrition – reduces pain and inflammation
• HEALTHIER DIET AND LIFESTYLE, some individuals just want to know how and what to eat and how to move

During your initial consultation, a detailed full case health history and diet sheet will be taken. In some cases I may request diagnostic laboratory testing to evaluate further what is going on in the body, these are at an extra cost and are optional. Following the initial assessment, you will be given a protocol to include a detailed explanation of the contributing factors to your symptoms as well as personalised and sustainable nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. I may include a combination of Herbal Medicine, Food Supplements, Homeopathy, Biochemic Salts or Bach flowers.

A follow up consultation is recommended 4 weeks after the initial consultation and will be booked during your initial consultation. Further follow ups may be required depending on each individual situation.

Reflexology is an ancient, non-intrusive complementary therapy which is based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower legs or hands correspond with different areas of the body. Reflexologists believe that working these points or areas aids relaxation and improves wellbeing.

With ever increasing levels of stress in everyday life, it is important for people to recognise the detrimental effect that this can have and to take action to address their own healthcare needs: as such, Reflexology could be one of the ways you might employ to ease the stresses of modern life.

The Ashdown Clinic is an integrated healthcare provider with a unique team approach using different specialised practices and technologies to assist with a wide variety of physical symptoms that are causing pain and ill health to the sufferer. These conditions in themselves can also put the human body under considerable stress.

In these circumstances, the possible stress relieving qualities of Reflexology could aid an individual’s recovery and wellbeing during their treatment.

What happens when I go for Reflexology?

Reflexology is a very easy treatment to receive; at most you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks.
A full medical history will be taken and you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to the treatment. All information will be kept confidentially.
The therapist will then use their thumbs, fingers or knuckles to apply pressure to the feet and sometimes the lower leg or hands depending on the type of Reflexology chosen.
Some areas of the feet may feel tender when pressed, but this will pass. The general experience should feel relaxing.

The therapist will talk to you after your treatment about what they felt which may lead them to recommend further treatments to aid wellbeing. Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

Will I benefit from Reflexology?

As holistic practitioners, reflexologists are there to support you as a whole person and promote your wellbeing. Therefore, reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or cure.

Reflexology acknowledges that every person is a unique individual; it is not possible to know in advance how you will react to a Reflexology treatment. However, after a treatment people often do feel very relaxed, may sleep better and notice a feeling of improved mood and general wellbeing. You may find other things improve too, but this happens on an individual basis.

The only real way to know if Reflexology will help you is to try it!

Ayurvedic Medicine is the ancient and time-tested Indian art of balancing the physical, mental and emotional elements of life. Literally translated as the Science of Life, it is a comprehensive system of healthcare with origins that go back about 3,500 – 4,000 years. Since then it has been the most important medical system in India with clearly defined methods of effectively treating ailments affecting all organs and systems of the body. It is used for healing the sick, preventing illness occurring in the first place, and to help individuals lead a longer, healthier and more vibrant life. In our fast paced modern western world, those who turn to Ayurveda often find it brings immeasurable benefits to their life as a whole. One criticism of modern medicine can be that it often treats the symptoms rather than the cause of the illness. Ayurveda, however, treats the cause, thereby curing dis-ease where other approaches fail.

Ayurvedic treatments are tailored to the individual. Everyone is different, therefore every treatment is different. A consultation would normally consist of clinical examination, pulse reading and diagnosis of imbalances. Treatment to balance the body system as a whole (the three Doshas consisting of vata, pitta and kapha), detoxification, detoxification, prescription of medicinal herbs, massage.

Skin & hair problems

Low libido
Anxiety / Depression

PMS
Pre-conception fertility

I have enjoyed a professional relationship with the Ashdown Clinic for the past five years delivering Reflexology treatments to a diverse number of clients who have become interested in the benefits of this holistic treatment.

I am the mother of two very grown up children who are living happy, independent lives, allowing my husband and I to indulge in the excitement of foreign travel; the delights of the British countryside; attending performances by our musical heroes and appreciating the company of friends.

I have discovered the fulfilment of volunteering by providing Reflexology treatments at Isabel Hospice to patients, their career’s, volunteers and staff. My enjoyment and happiness of life has been greatly enhanced by my own personal development through the arts, the practice of mindfulness, increasing my knowledge of life, keeping myself fit, the pursuit of a healthy and tranquil lifestyle and the continuing care of my immediate and extended family.

I am a Member of the Association of Reflexologists (MAR) and have been practicing Reflexology since qualifying in 2009 with the qualification of Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology.

As a State Registered Nurse (SRN) of some years I have become increasingly aware that treating the sick and injured as a whole person rather than a condition or set of symptoms can have considerable effect on their recovery, management and wellbeing.

My introduction to Reflexology was a confirmation of the power of holistic care and my subsequent Reflexology training endorsed the basic caring principles from my nursing training. I find that my Reflexology practice is in turn enriched by my nursing knowledge of human physiology, common ailments, ill health, injuries and their conventional treatments. As I have developed my Reflexology treatments I aim to focus on the effects of stress on an individual body, endeavouring to support the whole body of a person and thus assisting in promoting their own wellbeing.

As holistic practitioners, reflexologists aim to support the whole person and I feel that this is true whether a client is looking for support during:

▪periods of illness

▪recovery from injury

▪stressful periods in their lives

▪sustaining a healthy body and mind

I am interested in assisting people who feel they need support with:

✓▪Relaxation

✓▪Release of tension caused by illness or injury

✓▪Personal wellbeing

✓▪Sleeping issues

✓▪Fertility issues

✓▪Mood improvement

My Reflexology treatments acknowledge that every person is a unique individual and it is thus not possible to know in advance how each person will react to a treatment. However, my goal is to provide each client with a supportive and sensitively beneficial relationship that enables them to act in addressing their own healthcare needs.

I have worked closely with in both the sporting and private sector for the past 7 years, and have a particularly keen interest in sporting injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. I have experience in a variety of different sports and have treated athletes from the recreational amateur level all the way to the professional level.

I enjoy a range of sports from football, rugby, golf, tennis and running. However, my main sporting passion is Cricket where I have represented Hertfordshire County at age group level, and now play regularly for my local team Old Owens CC.

At the clinic I specialise in Sports Massage Therapy, which I see as a key component to aiding recovery from injury, and as a source of injury prevention during training. Using my sports background I will also advise on any biomechanical issues that may be causing your problem and how to fix them, helping to provide a fully holistic treatment plan for each of my patients.

I came to soft tissue therapy from a background in teaching yoga, specialising in yoga and structural fitness for athletes across a wide variety of disciplines, using sport-specific biomechanical analysis and movement work for injury prevention/rehab.

My experience includes running, cycling, football, rugby, tennis, archery, weightlifting/training, triathlon, skiing, boxing and dance. I regularly prepare clients for races and competitions and have worked on a volunteer basis at events including marathons, ironmans and 100km challenges.

As well as athletes in training and competition or needing treatment for soft tissue injuries, my clients include many non-athletes encountering the stresses and strains of everyday life or their profession, such as actors and singers, writers, photographers, manual and desk workers, and those sitting or on their feet all day!
